4. Fort Smith Museum of History
As a local history museum, the Fort Smith Museum of History is an incredible place to visit if you are into history. This museum is located downtown, so it's very easy to get to. Once inside, you will be greeted with a variety of exhibits such as the optometry shop, woodworking tools and creations, and the old-timey courtroom complete with spittoons. Museum staff dressed in period costumes added a very nice touch. They also have a souvenir shop which offers lots of unique books about the interesting history of Fort Smith.
There's also an active trolley outside the museum if you want to ride an antique trolley. But if you don't want to have a ride, there's a walking trail beside the building where you can walk or jog around and check out the museum's landscaping. Make sure to get a real chocolate soda at the soda fountain on your way out!
5. Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie
Another interesting museum on our list is the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie. It provides an intimate look into the daily lives of the early people who lived in the area during the early to the mid-20th century. This museum has a variety of exhibits, and it is one of the most underrated museums in the state.
This museum has well laid out collections. Once inside, you will be directed to an exquisite hand painted mural surrounded by display room. It shows the changes in Grand Prairie from the 1600s to the present.
Inside, every corner holds a surprise. Every interior room has a different focus -- duck hunting, military airfield, John Deere equipment, restored buggies, wagons, and cars.
Outside, there are collections in every window of the main building as well as a collection of period buildings. Also within the vicinity is the Prairie Church, a 2/3-size replica of the first Emanuel Lutheran Church founded by a reverend.
