Love baseball? Here's a fun fact: the game has been around in the United States for over 150 years! That's right--baseball has a long and rich history, dating all the way back to the 18th century.

For the uninitiated, baseball is a bat-and-ball sport that is played between two teams of nine players each. The objective of the game is to score runs by hitting a ball thrown by the pitcher with a bat, then running around four bases to reach home plate. Sounds simple enough, right?

But there's more to baseball than just hitting and running. In fact, there are many benefits to playing this great game. For one, it's excellent exercise -- good for both your body and your mind. It can also be very exciting, whether you're watching your favorite team in the Major Leagues or your kids playing in Little League. And did we mention that it's loads of fun?!

Even if you're new to baseball or have been playing for years, we've got some interesting facts for you to check out. If you're ready to step up your game, let's play ball!

A Brief History of Baseball

Fun fact: each ball that is used in MLB has exactly 108 stitches!

Today, baseball is played in many different countries around the world and is considered an important part of American culture. This game is beloved by many; it even earned the nickname of being the "great American pastime."

The origin of baseball is quite difficult to trace, but it evolved from older bat-and-ball games. David Block, a baseball historian, says that the precursor to baseball was invented in England, even dating back to the 15th century.

Block also discovered the earliest recorded baseball game, featuring none other than the Prince of Wales as a player. This game took place in 1749 in Surrey, England, and back then, baseball was still called "Base-Ball". This early version of the game was then brought to Canada by English immigrants.

In the United States, the first officially recorded baseball game took place in Hoboken, New Jersey on June 19, 1846. Since then, the game has continued to evolve and grow.

Baseball's Different Leagues

At present, baseball is played professionally in two different leagues:

Major League Baseball (MLB) - the oldest major professional sports league in the world, MLB is composed of 30 teams that are further divided into two leagues: 15 teams in the National League and the other 15 in the American League.

The National League was founded in 1876, and the American League in 1901. Both leagues have had their fair share of ups and downs, but are still very popular.

Minor League Baseball (MiLB) - Minor league baseball is a professional baseball league consisting of teams that are not in the major leagues. Teams in the minor leagues are typically composed of players who have not achieved major league status, although there are some exceptions.

MiLB is divided into four classes: Triple-A (AAA), Double-A (AA), High-A (A+), and Single-A (A), with each class having its own further division.

However, playing baseball isn't limited to professional games. There are plenty of high schools and college teams out there. Some of the best players in the world are in college!

It's worth mentioning that many players in the Major Baseball League came from Little League programs. These are organized locally and structured to best serve the kids in the area where it operates. This league is designed to teach children how to play baseball while also having fun, so it's the perfect opportunity for kids to learn the game and develop their skills.

Little League programs are a great way to encourage your kids to be physically fit!
