Exploring the Natural Wonders of America's National Forests

March 21, 2023

Welcome!

This is the GetOutPass blog. It's where we explore topics we're interested in. We hope you'll find them useful too! Feel free to stay and explore.

America is full of natural wonders, some of the most awe-inspiring sights in the world. It's no wonder, then, that our country's national forests are largely undiscovered.

For this blog post, you need to grab your hiking boots and get ready for an adventure like no other. Together, let's explore America's most beautiful national forests and what they have to offer.

So, without further ado, let's get started!

Superior National Forest

Superior National Forest is quite the spectacle. It's like someone took all the beautiful features of nature, shook them up in a bag, and emptied them out in Minnesota. Rugged cliffs, gentle hills, canyon walls, rocky shores, sandy beaches, and lakes of every size? It's like you've won the natural lottery!

But wait, there's more. This one million-acre paradise is also home to some incredible wildlife — including the last remaining population of gray wolves. We can only assume that the wolves are so enticed by the incredible beauty of Superior National Forest that they don't want to leave — who could blame them?

At Superior National Forest, you can find plenty of streams and a wide variety of trees, plants, and animals — black bears, white-tailed deer, moose; it's like an exotic safari without having to leave the US! And let's not forget about all the fish species swimming around in its many water bodies, from rainbow trout to northern pike and walleye. What else could you ask for?

Dixie National Forest

From its bright red spires to its towering ponderosa pines, Dixie National Forest in Utah is one of the most beautiful places in America. But don’t worry, it’s not getting the attention it deserves due to nearby destinations like Zion National Park and Vermilion Cliffs. Sadly, many would just go on a hiking trip to see some rocks instead of visiting a national forest.

But Dixie has so much more to offer than just rocks. Red Canyon is a sight for sore eyes with its brilliant hues, and Navajo Lake provides plenty of activities for nature lovers. And let’s not forget Boulder/Grover Road on Boulder Mountain — a scenic drive that will take your breath away (if you don’t run out of gas first).

So, next time you’re looking for an adventure and want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, head on over to Dixie National Forest and experience the beauty that this underrated gem has to offer.

Tongass National Forest

Tongass National Forest is truly an impressive sight to behold. Spanning an area of 16.7 million acres, it's so large that it takes up more than twice the space of Israel! With its temperate rainforests, fjords, glaciers, streams, lakes, waterfalls and towering peaks, Tongass National Forest is a natural wonderland full of activities for the whole family. From hiking to kayaking to bird watching and fishing, there's something for everyone here.

But don't let the natural beauty fool you: Tongass National Forest has also been exploited for decades due its huge size and abundance of resources. The forest has been clearcut in large swaths and some of the wildest areas are still under threat. It's almost like Mother Nature just can't catch a break!

Oh, did we mention that scenes from the 1982 horror/sci-fi film The Thing were filmed here? Yeah, we're sure that added to the natural ambiance. But seriously, if you're looking for a beautiful place to explore in Alaska, Tongass National Forest is definitely worth checking out. Just make sure to be respectful of the environment and leave no trace. Let's keep this national treasure in pristine condition, shall we?

White River National Forest

White River National Forest is truly a paradise for anyone looking for some quality outdoor recreation. Whether you're a climber, photographer, camper, or skier, the forest has something for everyone — even those of us who just want to stand around and appreciate its beauty!

But it's not just the breathtaking views that make this national forest so special; it was also where Arthur Carhart had his "aha!" moment and realized that conserving natural areas from human development was important. He proposed a plan to the US Forest Service that resulted in the creation of federally designated wilderness areas.

Talk about making your mark in history!

It's no wonder why White River National Forest is such a popular destination. Not only are there eight wilderness areas, but 10 mountain peaks over 14,000ft as well.

So if you're looking for an unforgettable vacation spot with plenty of activities and stunning natural beauty, White River National Forest is the perfect place to visit.

Coconino National Forest

Coconino National Forest in Arizona is certainly one of the most beautiful and unique places on earth, but it's also an excellent choice for those who want to get away from it all and enjoy some much-needed alone time.

After all, when you think of "Arizona," the last thing that comes to mind is a national forest — it's much more likely you'll be picturing saguaro cacti and desert. And when you hear "national forest," you don't usually imagine red rocks or alpine tundra — you're more likely to picture miles of evergreen-covered mountains. But Coconino National Forest defies both expectations!

There's much more to Coconino National Forest than its stunning scenery. It's also home to an array of wildlife, from elk and javelinas to black bears and rattlesnakes. It's no surprise then that this area is a popular spot for outdoor recreation like hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping.

And if all that wasn't enough, the forest also boasts an important archaeological site atop the remains of an ancient Sinagua village at Elden Pueblo — items found here have been traced as far away as Mexico and California, suggesting that a major trade outpost was nearby.

Conclusion

America's most beautiful national forests are a prime example of the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer. Whether you're looking to take in breathtaking views or just get away from it all, these majestic forests will have something for everyone.
