March 12 is Girls Scout Day! This holiday celebrates the day that Juliette Gordon Low organized a meeting with a small group of girls in Savannah, Georgia. This meeting would go on to change the lives of girls everywhere, as it marked the beginning of the Girl Scouts organization. Low thought about an organization that would take young women off the street and inspire them to serve their communities, get involved in nature, and learn "self-reliance and resourcefulness."
What started as a small group of girls has grown into a worldwide movement. In 2013, there were over 2.3 million members.
The Girl Scouts organization helps young girls develop important life skills like leadership, teamwork, entrepreneurship, compassion, and confidence through activities such as camping, community service, and practical skills.
Girls Scouts are helping to make the world a better place. In fact, a lot of powerful and influential women today are Girl Scouts, Michelle Obama being one of them! No wonder she's so good at everything she does...
So, what can you do to celebrate Girls Scout Day? Here are some fun ideas:
Volunteer at a girls' shelter or mentoring program
Look for local organizations that work with young girls and offer your time to help out. This is a great way to give back to your community and support the next generation of women leaders.
Make a difference in your community
There are many ways to make a positive impact on your community. You could volunteer for a cleanup project, participate in a food drive, or raise money for a good cause. Girls Scouts have been making a difference since 1912!
Bake Girl Scout Cookies!
This one is pretty self-explanatory: get together with some friends, crank up the ovens, and whip up some delicious cookies! If you don't feel like baking them yourselves, a great way to support the Girl Scouts is to buy their cookies directly from a Girl Scout. I wasn't sure if there were any in my area, but I used their website and the "Cookie Finder" feature to buy some cookies from their website from your local group! There's almost nothing like ripping open a box of Tagalongs and eating the entire thing in one sitting.
Get outside and explore
The Girl Scout motto is "Be prepared ." What better way to celebrate Girls Scout Day than by getting outside and exploring the world around you? Pack a lunch, grab your friends, and head out for an adventure. There's no shortage of fun things to do in nature!
Make something new
Girls Scouts have always been known for their creativity and ingenuity. Why not use Girls Scout Day as an opportunity to try something new? Whether it's learning how to knit or build a model car, there are plenty of activities that will help you tap into your creative side.
Movie night
Have a movie night featuring girl power films like "Hidden Figures" and "Wonder Woman." There's nothing like a good chick flick to get you in the Girls Scout spirit! Pop some popcorn, gather your friends, and settle in for a night of inspiring films.
Get festive!
Throw a Girl Scout Day celebration and invite all your friends! There are lots of fun ideas out there for decorations, games, and snacks. Be sure to check out the Girl Scouts website for inspiration.

Girl Scouts have been wearing uniforms since 1912, and there's a good reason why! They're a great way to show your allegiance to the Girl Scouts movement, and they make you stand out from the crowd. So put on your vest or sash and celebrate Girls Scout Day in style!
