International Waffle Day is a holiday that celebrates one of the most delicious breakfast food around -- waffles! This special day falls on March 25 each year and is a great excuse to enjoy this tasty treat.

Waffles have been around for centuries, with the first known recipe dating back to the 14th century. These early waffles were made from a batter of flour, milk, and eggs and were cooked on a hot griddle or iron. Waffles became popular in Europe during the 17th century and were often served as a dessert or snack.

Culinary historians believed that the first waffle was made in ancient Greece and was called Obelios. Whereas the very first waffle recipe was found in the book  Le Ménagier de Paris, a French medieval guidebook:

"Beat some eggs in a bowl, season with salt, and add wine. Toss in some flour, and mix. Then fill, little by little, two irons at a time with as much of the paste as a slice of cheese is large. Then close the iron and cook both sides. If the dough does not detach easily from the iron, coat it first with a piece of cloth that has been soaked in oil or grease."

Waffle irons, on the other hand, first came about in the 13-14th century and allowed for a more evenly cooked waffle.

It was the Dutch who introduced waffles to the US in the 17th century. On August 24, 1869, Cornelius Swarthout patented the modern stovetop waffle maker resulting in the explosion of the popularity of this delicious food.

Nowadays, there are all sorts of waffles, from the traditional Belgian style to Americanized versions with chocolate chips or fruit. No matter what your preference, there's a waffle out there for you!

Our Favorite Varieties of Waffles

Did you know that there are a lot of different varieties of waffles? Here are just a few of our favorite types of waffles from around the world.

The Belgian Waffle

The Belgian waffle is by far the most popular. It is a yeast-risen waffle that is leavened with baking powder, eggs, and butter. The batter is then put into a special iron that imprints a grid pattern on both sides of the waffle. Belgian waffles are usually served with fruit, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce.

The Dutch Stroopwafel

The Dutch Stroopwafel is a thin, round waffle that is made from two thin layers of baked dough with a filling in the middle. The most common filling is a syrup made from brown sugar and butter, but you can also find stroopwafels with chocolate, fruit, or even cheese fillings.

The Liege Waffle

A type of Belgian sugar waffle, the liege waffle is made with pearl sugar, yeast, flour, eggs, and butter. The pearl sugar doesn't dissolve when cooked, so it gives the waffle a crispy exterior with a slightly chewy interior. These waffles are often served plain or with fruit.

The Croffle

The croffle is a type of waffle that is made by combining a waffle and a croissant. It is widely popular in Korea and uses various toppings such as basil, cheese, and corn.

The Chinese Eggett

The Chinese eggett is an egg-based waffle that is popular in Hong Kong and Macau. They are commonly served hot and eaten plain, but they can also be served with fruits such as strawberries and coconuts.

Whether you're in the mood for something sweet or savory, there's definitely a type of waffle out there for you to enjoy.
