What Does International Women's Day Mean?

International Women’s Day is celebrated every March 8th. It was first observed in the early 20th century, but it wasn’t until the late 1970s that the date was chosen to commemorate the struggle of women for gender equality.

History of International Women's Day in the U.S.

Participating in civic activities is important to the development of the United States. However, the right to vote was only limited to white men until 1920. 

During the 1860s, Susan B. Anthony fought to have to right to vote granted to men and women in the United States. She was a women's rights activist, suffragist, and political reformer. 

Hoping that the 14th Amendment will grant suffrage rights to all Americans, she fought for its ratification. However, in 1868, the women's right to suffrage was not included in the 14th amendment. That's why a year later, she founded the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) with Elizabeth Cady Stanton to continue fighting for women's rights. 

It was not until 1920 that women were finally granted the right to vote, although this amendment only included white women. Then, with the liberation movement taking place in the 1960s, Voting Rights Act was passed. This allowed all women to vote, making equality more attainable.
