For those of you who don't know (which I doubt), the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament, or "March Madness", is an annual tournament held by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that determines the winner of the men's basketball championship of the United States.

It is one of the largest single-elimination tournaments in sports, and one of the biggest annual sporting events in the U.S. 68 teams will compete in the tournament, with each team playing at least one game per week until the championship game.

The tournament has been played since 1939, and for this year, it will be held from March 13 (Selection Sunday) to April 4 (National Championship).

How March Madness Works

March Madness is played over a three-week period in March. Currently, the tournament consists of several rounds:

  • The First Four - This round is played on the opening weekend of the tournament. It is a single-game elimination tournament between the four lowest-seeded teams from at-large teams and conference-champion teams. The winner of this round advances to the next round.
  • The First and Second Round - The first round of the NCAA basketball tournament is known as the first round. All teams are now within their respective "Region", and this is the round in which the teams play each other to determine who will advance to the second round.
  • The Regional Semifinals and Finals - Also known as "Sweet Sixteen" and "Elite Eight, respectively, these games are played during the second week of the tournament.
  • The National Semi-finals ("Final Four") - Here, every region has its own winner, which advances to the national semifinals. Whoever wins will participate in the national championship.
  • The National Championship - Finally, the remaining two teams will compete against each other to win the title of National Champions.

Jabari Smith, forward of Auburn Tigers, is one of the most talented players this season.

Best Teams of 2022

So, which team will win the NCAA tournament? Here are some of the top picks:

  1. Gonzaga Bulldogs - Gonzaga is always a force in the NCAA Tournament. Based in Spokane, Washington, they are the No. 1 overall seed for the tournament. Last year, they became the first undefeated team to the national championship since 1979, and although they lost the championship game to Baylor, they are still a force to be reckoned with.
  2. Arizona Wildcats - Although they were not ranked in the AP preseason rankings, Arizona Wildcats kept on winning, which moved their ranking up. They currently sit at 27-3 after beating USC and winning the PAC-12 regular-season title.
  3. Duke Blue Devils - With a current overall standing of 26-4 and first in ACC, Duke Blue Devils is truly a powerful team. Under the helm of Coach K, its players are always in top form, and their chemistry on the court is second to none. And they are more motivated to put in their best efforts due to Coach K's retirement after this season. Star Forward Paolo Banchero currently leads the scoring and rebounding of Duke, with 16.9 and 7.8, respectively.
  4. Baylor Bears - The reigning NCAA tournament champion. They are the best team in the Big 12 and they have a chance to be the best team in the country, especially with new freshmen Kendall Brown and Jeremy Sochan.
  5. Auburn Tigers - With an overall record of 26-4 and first in SEC, Auburn Tigers has a great chance of securing the tournament title. They are the best team in the SEC and are currently ranked 25 by AP. Jabari Smith, forward of Auburn Tigers and one of the most talented players in college basketball, is set to lead his team to a championship.
  6. Kansas Jayhawks - The Jayhawks are currently ranked 6 by AP and has been a consistent team throughout the year.  Coach Bill Self has a great track record in the NCAA tournament, and this year is no different. Add to this their breakout guard Ochai Agbaji, and you have a team that is capable of knocking off any team in the tournament.
  7. Kentucky Wildcats - Standing at second place in the SEC, Coach John Calipari has proven that he is a great coach in the NCAA tournament, and is always capable of taking a team to the final. With a team of talented players such as Oscar Tshiebwe, Sahvir Wheeler, TyTy Washington, and Kellan Grady, Kentucky Wildcats are sure to have a great run. They currently have an overall standing of 24-6.
  8. Purdue Boilermakers - Purdue is one of the best mid-major teams, and they are really making an effort to take the championship this season. They appeared twice in the Final Four in the past, and they have a great chance to exceed that this year. They are currently ranked 8 by AP.

Mike Krzyzewski, more popularly known as Coach K and current coach of Duke Blue Devils, is set to retire after this season.
