March 14 is National Pi Day! This special day celebrates the mathematical constant pi (π). Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter and is approximately equal to 3.1416.

Pi has many interesting applications in mathematics and physics, but it also has a cultural significance. In the UK, pi is pronounced 'pie' and is often used as a synonym for pastry.

The idea of Pi day dates back to 1988 when physicist Larry Shaw organized a celebration at San Francisco's Exploratorium. The event included a Pi Parade and the eating of fruit pies.

Today, Pi Day is celebrated around the world with various festivities. Here are some fun ways to celebrate National Pi Day:

  • Watch a math-related movie - There are many great movies about mathematics and physicists. Some of my personal favorites include The Man Who Knew Infinity, A Beautiful Mind, and Hidden Figures.
  • Learn about pi - If you don’t know much about pi, now is the perfect time to learn! There are plenty of resources available online and in libraries.
  • Try some math problems - Math can be a challenging but fun subject. Why not try solving some of the easier Pi Day-related problems? There are plenty of online resources that can help you get started.
  • Attend a Pi Day celebration - Many schools and even museums host special events on National Pi Day. Check out the event listings in your area to see if there is something happening near you.
  • Have a conversation about pi - Pi has been around for thousands of years, so there is plenty to talk about! Why not discuss some of the interesting facts about pi or its applications?
  • Make or eat a pie - This is the most obvious way to celebrate Pi Day! Pi is pronounced 'pie', so what better way to celebrate than with some delicious food? You could make your own pies or buy them from a bakery.
