National Read Across America Day

March 2, 2022

Welcome!

This is the GetOutPass blog. It's where we explore topics we're interested in. We hope you'll find them useful too! Feel free to stay and explore.

March 2 is National Read Across America Day, dedicated to reading and celebrating books. The holiday was founded in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Dr. Seuss was an American author and illustrator who wrote and illustrated many popular children's books, including "The Cat in the Hat", "Green Eggs and Ham", and "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish". His books are beloved by children all over the world and continue to be read today.

Reading is a very important part of childhood development and helps children learn about the world around them. Books can teach kids about different cultures, history, science, and more.

The National Education Association has been leading the celebration of National Read Across America Day for over 20 years, and it continues to grow in popularity every year.

In addition to reading books, the NEA encourages children to participate in other activities such as wearing costumes based on their favorite characters or making bookmarks or posters.

Why We Love Reading

1. Reading is fun

Reading is fun because it allows us to explore different worlds without ever leaving our homes. We can be cowboys, princesses, space explorers, and so much more. With books, the possibilities are endless!

2. Reading helps us learn about new things

We love reading because it helps us learn about new things. We can learn about history, science, and other cultures without ever having to leave our bedroom. Reading is a great way to get smarter and learn new things!

3. Reading is a way to spend time with your loved ones

Finally, we love reading because it's a way to spend time with friends and family. We can all just sit down together and read the same book or take turns reading different parts aloud. Reading is a fun way to connect with the people we love most.

Fun Ways to Celebrate National Read Across America Day

March 2 is National Read Across America Day, a day set aside to celebrate reading and books. Dr. Seuss's birthday is also celebrated on this day, so it's a perfect time to get kids excited about reading! Here are some of the super fun ways to celebrate National Read Across America Day:

1. Have a book swap party. Get together with your family and friends and swap books. This is a great way to get new books for your library, and it's also a lot of fun!

2. Read together as a family. One of the best ways to celebrate reading is to read together as a family. Pick out your favorite books and read them together. It is a great way to spend time together and to learn more about each other.

Reading can be a great bonding time with your kids...

3. Visit your local library. The library is a great place to celebrate National Read Across America Day. They often have special events and activities planned for the day, so be sure to check out what's going on at your local library.

4. Make a book tree. A book tree is a great way to show off your favorite books. All you need is a sturdy branch and some nails or screws. Hang your books from the branch, and voila! You've got yourself a book tree.

5. Make a Dr. Seuss hat. This is a fun and easy craft that kids will love. All you need is some construction paper, tape, glue, and a marker. You can find instructions for making a Dr. Seuss hat online.

6. Read online. If you're not able to visit your local library or participate in any of the other activities, don't worry! You can still celebrate National Read Across America Day by reading online. There are tons of great books available online, and you can read them all from the comfort of your own home.

7. Read in bed. One of the best things about National Read Across America Day is that it's a great excuse to read in bed all day long. Snuggle up with your favorite books and enjoy a day of reading!

...Especially before they sleep!

Our Book Recommendation

I sure love reading, and here are the best books that I would recommend you read! Let's start off with some of the best books from the Philippines! There are so many great Filipino children's books out there it's hard to just pick a few! But if I had to choose, some of my favorites are:

Reading is the simplest way to have fun without traveling--staycation, anyone?

Araw sa Palengke (A Day in The Market) - May Tobias-Papa

This book is all about a young girl's trip to the market with her mom. It's a great way to teach kids about where their food comes from, and the illustrations are beautiful.

Si Tatang at ang mga Bituin sa Langit (The Old Man and The Stars in The Sky) - Virgilio S. Almario

This is one of my all-time favorite books ever. It's a traditional folktale about a man who can make the stars appear in the sky by wishing on them.

Ang Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang (Stories of Granny Basyang) - Lola Basyang

These are a series of folktales from the Philippines, collected and retold by a grandmother. They're great for teaching kids about Filipino culture and folklore.

All of these books are wonderful examples of Filipino culture and folklore, and they're sure to captivate any child's imagination.

I also love reading classic American children's looks like:

Dr. Seuss' Books

Dr. Seuss is one of my all-time favorite authors, and his books are perfect for National Read Across America Day. My favorites are The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.

The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is another one of my all-time favorites. It's such a beautiful, sad story that teaches kids about giving and love.

The Magic Treehouse

The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne is a must-read for any kid who loves adventure. Jack and Annie travel to all sorts of different places and times and learn about history and culture along the way.

Other highly-recommended books to read on National Read Across America Day are:

  • The Snowman and The Sun by Susan Taghdis
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
