When it comes to movies, there's no doubt that women have always been strong and powerful characters. From the very beginning, women have taken on lead roles in films, oftentimes playing characters that are just as complex and inspiring as their male counterparts. Here are some of our favorite female-led movies.

Alien

Ripley, watch out!

In Ridley Scott's 1979 classic, Sigourney Weaver plays Ripley, the sole survivor of a space voyage that has been attacked by an alien creature. Ripley must use all her strength and resourcefulness to fight off the alien and return to safety. Her lead role in this movie is subtle, yet powerful. She is the single voice of reason at the beginning of the movie, and if the crew had listened to her, they would have avoided the nightmare they experience on the ship.

Annihilation

2018's Annihilation saw Natalie Portman take on the role of Lena, a biologist who joins an all-female team of soldiers on a dangerous mission into an environmental disaster zone. Lena must face her fears and confront the unknown in order to make it out alive. This movie is a wild ride from start to finish. You'll want/need to watch it a few times to totally get it. But when it finally clicks... wow! Incredible film.

The Help

Based on the best-selling novel, The Help tells the story of African American maids working in white households in the 1960s South. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer give two powerful performances as two of the maids who risk everything to tell their stories.

Frozen

Anna and Elsa are both memorable characters that you can surely relate to.

In Disney's 2013 smash hit, Kristen Bell voices Anna, a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey to find her sister, Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel), and end an eternal winter. Along the way, Anna must overcome obstacles and learn to love herself in order to save her kingdom.

Mulan

Another Disney classic, Mulan features a brave young woman who takes her father's place in the Chinese army. Disguised as a man, Mulan must fight for her country and learn to be true to herself. Controversial take: the 1998 film is miles ahead of the remake. The remake was... yikes.

Little Women

The latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, Little Women, follows the lives of the March sisters during the Civil War. Saoirse Ronan stars as Jo, an aspiring writer who must grapple with the responsibilities of adulthood.

"But--I am so lonely." Goosebumps.

A League of Their Own

In this 1992 classic, Geena Davis stars as a woman who joins an all-female baseball league during World War II. The film is both funny and poignant and showcases the strength and resilience of the women who played professional baseball in the 1940s.

"There's no crying in baseball!"

Hidden Figures

Based on a true story, Hidden Figures tells the inspiring tale of a group of African American women who were integral to the success of NASA's space program in the 1960s. The film celebrates the achievements of these brilliant women, who made history despite facing  discrimination and adversity.
