Most Influential Women in Politics 2022

March 11, 2022

Welcome!

This is the GetOutPass blog. It's where we explore topics we're interested in. We hope you'll find them useful too! Feel free to stay and explore.

We've come to a time in history when the world is facing unprecedented challenges. During these uncertain times, there are so many women who have made a huge impact on our world.

Some of them are politicians, some of them are social workers, some of them are scientists, and others are just regular people who have made a difference.

For this blog post, we'll focus on the extraordinary women achievers in politics this year. Let us all be inspired by their stories and how they use their power to fight for the values that they stand for.

Without further ado, let's get started.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

In just a few years, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most influential women in politics. Since 2019, she has served as a House representative for New York's 14th congressional district. She is the youngest woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez graduated cum laude at Boston University with a double-major in international relations and economics. She supports progressive policies such as workplace democracy and tuition-free public colleges. She also is well versed in using social media to her advantage, making memes and pop culture references to strategically get her point across to the younger audience. Quite brilliant, I must say.

Kamala Harris

An extraordinary leader, Kamala Harris is a woman of many firsts. Currently sitting as the vice president of the United States and the first female to hold such office, she is also the highest-ranking female official in the history of our country.

From 2017 to 2021, she served as a senator representing the State of California.

She is a champion for healthcare reform and granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants.

Nancy Pelosi

The only woman in U.S. history to serve as speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi has served as a representative from California's 12th district since 1987.

She advocates for LGBT rights and supported legislation such as same-sex marriage and the Equality Act. She also called for action to curb climate change, saying that it is "the existential threat of our time."

Janet Yellen

Janet Yellen, the current secretary of the treasury of the United States, is an economist and educator. She was also the chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018. She is the first woman to hold either role.

Yellen has been a champion for fiscal responsibility and advocated for tighter financial regulations.

Mia Mottley

A Barbadian politician, Mia Mottley is the Prime Minister of Barbados since 2018. She is the first woman in Barbados to hold such a position. When Barbados abolished its constitutional monarchy, she led her country on transitioning to a republican system of government. With many years of political experience under her belt, she was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in Barbaros's House of Assembly.

Her party, Barbados Labour Party (BLP), had won a historic landslide victory in 2018. Under her leadership, BLP secured all 30 seats in the House of Assembly.

Lynn Martin

Although she's not an elected or appointed public official, Lynn Martin holds enormous power when it comes to the financial health not just of the United States but of other nations as well.

She is currently the president of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the biggest stock exchange in the world.

Her guiding principles on managing NYSE are the following:

  • Every company is a technology company
  • Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) will only grow in importance
  • Our capital markets are without equal

She believes that data and technology allow us to do much more at a much faster pace, but she also emphasizes the importance of people working together towards a common goal.

Kathy Hochul

A member of the Democratic Party, Kathy Hochul is the first female governor of New York. She also served as a United States representative from 2011 to 2013 but was defeated for reelection in 2012.

Kathy Hochul is also the founder of Kathleen Mary House, a temporary home for victims of domestic abuse.

Nemonte Nenquimo

Nemonte Nenquimo of Waorani is an indigenous leader and environmental steward, leading a campaign and legal action to protect indigenous people's territory in the Amazon.

She spearheaded a petition against the oil concessionaires who want to set their businesses within Amazon forest, and her actions led to a lawsuit that set a legal precedent for indigenous rights in Ecuador.

While fighting against the oil concessionaires, she also helped communities to be independent against oil company handouts by giving rainwater harvesting systems and starting a woman-led chocolate production business.

She was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for her efforts in defending the environment.

Deb Haaland

A member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, Deb Haaland is currently serving as Secretary of the Interior in the United States.

Before this, she was the representative for the 1st congressional district of New Mexico from 2019 to 2021.

Deb Haaland is the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary. She champions the creation of jobs and reducing economic inequality while addressing climate change.

Lina Khan

Lina Khan is the chair of the Federal Trade Commission of the United States. She is known for her work in competition law and antitrust regulations.

While still a student at Yale Law School, she became famous for her article entitled "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox", described by the New York Times as "reframing decades of monopoly law".

Kristalina Georgieva

A Bulgarian economist, Kristalina Georgieva is currently serving as the chair and managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

She works on fostering global monetary cooperation, securing financial stability, and facilitating international trade.

She was also the Chief Executive of the World Bank Group from 2017 to 2019 and later served as its Acting President.

Conclusion

Today, we can see how many women have managed to gain power and reach positions of influence. We can also see how they use such powers to fight for the values that they stand for.

It's clear that there are a lot of different views on what leadership means, but the people mentioned above all embody the spirit of leadership in one way or another.

Here at GetOutPass, we believe that the most important aspect of leadership is to serve the people. As such, this list shows how different women are today. They are stronger, braver, more confident, and all of them want to make the world a better place.
